Construction Requirements Within City Limits

Fire Prevention Standards:

Installation and Maintenance of Private Fire Hydrants

The Fire Department utilizes the 2022 edition of the California Fire and Building Code.

Any structure that exceeds 3,000 square feet, including attached residential garage areas, requires the installation of fire sprinklers and must adhere to 2022 NFPA standards for installation.

Hazardous occupancies, as defined in the California Building Code, hotels, motels, apartment buildings, triplexes/duplexes, and single family dwellings are required to have fire sprinkler systems installed regardless of the building size.

Additionally any existing residence that adds more than 50% of the total square footage or more than 3000 square feet total requires a fire sprinkler system to be installed throughout the entire residence.

Fire department connections for fire sprinkler systems are to be located within forty feet of a fire hydrant.

Fire hydrant spacing is located in Appendix C of the 2022 California Fire Code. The standard model of hydrant used is Clow #960.  See Fire Prevention Standard for installation and maintenance of hydrants above.

Fire hydrants are to be kept clear of vegetation, fencing, or other obstructions for at least three feet in any direction from the hydrant. NO PARKING IS PERMITTED WITHIN 20 FEET OF ANY FIRE HYDRANT.

Fire extinguishers are to be mounted in easily accessible locations and are to be mounted no higher than forty-eight inches from the floor to the bottom of the extinguisher. The minimum acceptable rating for a fire extinguisher is 2:A 10:BC. The rating may be higher depending upon the type of business. Fire extinguishers are to be serviced annually.

An address must be posted that it is readily visible from the street. The minimum height permitted is four inches and is increased depending on the height of the building and/or the building distance from the street. All addresses are to be internally illuminated.

Any building or facility that has a fire alarm, fire suppression system, or under special circumstances as determined by the Chief, will require a KNOX box to be installed on the premises at a location to be determined by the Fire Department.

Fire department access roads shall comply with the requirements found in the 2022 California Fire Code Section 503 and Appendix D.

Any gate to a facility shall require the approval of the Fire Department. All electrically/mechanically operated gates shall have a KNOX keyway installed to operate the gate at any hour.

Any food cooking operations that produce grease laden vapors must be protected with a UL300 fire suppression system.
